Getting Married in Cyprus as a Foreigner: Civil Marriage Steps
Documents, notices and appointments for a civil marriage, and how to make the marriage valid in your home country.
Gather civil status documents
Each partner usually needs a passport, birth certificate and a certificate of no impediment or single status. Previously married persons need divorce or death certificates. Foreign documents need apostille and certified translation.
Give notice and book the ceremony
Apply to the Marriage Officer of the municipality or district where you wish to marry. Notice periods apply and two witnesses are required. Many couples use a local advocate or wedding planner to manage the appointment.
Obtain the certificate and legalise it for home use
After the ceremony you receive the marriage certificate. Request an apostille and, where your home country requires it, a certified translation so the marriage is recorded there.
FAQ
Should we sign a prenuptial agreement?
A written agreement on property can reduce disputes if the marriage ends, particularly where partners hold assets in several countries. Its enforceability depends on the law that governs it, so take advice before the wedding.
