Employment Contracts in Cyprus: Terms, Holidays and Notice

What a written employment contract must contain, key statutory minimums and what to check before you sign.

This is not legal advice.

Insist on a written contract

Employers must give written information on the main terms soon after hiring: parties, role, start date, pay, hours, leave and notice. A missing or vague contract makes disputes harder to prove.

Documents required at this step:Draft contract, job description, pay structure

Check statutory minimums

Look at paid annual leave, working time limits, overtime, sick leave and the minimum wage where it applies. Contract terms cannot give you less than the statutory floor, whatever you sign.

Documents required at this step:Payslips, leave records, timesheets

Review restrictive clauses before signing

Non-compete, confidentiality, bonus clawback and unilateral change clauses are enforceable only within limits. Ask your advocate to review these, and negotiate any that are unreasonably wide.

Documents required at this step:Contract annexes, bonus policy, employee handbook

FAQ

How much notice must I give if I resign?

Notice depends on your contract and length of service, with statutory minimums for both parties. Check the clause, as a longer contractual period can bind you.
