Maternity leave entitlement and Social Insurance allowances

Under the Protection of Maternity Law, female employees are entitled to 22 consecutive weeks of maternity leave for a first child (expanded for subsequent children and multiples). Social Insurance pays weekly maternity allowance (up to 72% of insurable earnings). Employers may top up pay at their discretion.

Documents required at this step:Medical pregnancy certificate with expected date of delivery, Social Insurance application form (YKA), employer leave confirmation

Paternity leave and parental leave for fathers and partners

Fathers are entitled to 2 consecutive weeks of paid paternity leave within the first 16 weeks of birth or adoption. Furthermore, each working parent is entitled to up to 18 weeks of parental leave per child up to age 8, with a portion paid through Social Insurance funds under EU Work-Life Balance rules.

Documents required at this step:Official birth certificate, marriage certificate or cohabitation proof, written paternity notice to employer

Enforce absolute statutory dismissal protection and nursing breaks

Cyprus law prohibits dismissal from the moment pregnancy is formally communicated until 5 months after maternity leave ends. Working mothers are entitled to either shorten their daily working day by 1 hour or take an hour's paid break daily for breastfeeding/childcare for 9 months after birth.

Documents required at this step:Written notification of pregnancy to employer, child birth registration, nursing break schedule agreement
